Conquer the Majestic Mount Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route

The Marangu route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, is one of the oldest and most established routes on Kilimanjaro. It is known for its easier ascent with a gradual incline and offers the convenience of sleeping in huts rather than tents. This route is perfect for climbers who prefer a less strenuous trek and enjoy the comforts of the mountain huts.

About the Marangu Route

The Marangu Route starts at the Marangu Gate and ascends through lush rainforest and alpine meadows, offering a beautiful and steady climb. The summit is reached via the scenic Uhuru Peak, and descending takes place via the same route. This route is typically completed in five to six days.

Mandara and Kibo Huts each have 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut has 120 bunk beds. Mattresses and pillows are provided, but sleeping bags are still necessary. The huts all include shared dining halls and basic washrooms, with flushing toilets and running water in the lower huts and lengthy drop toilets and buckets of water in Kibo Hut.

Because of its mild slope and direct road, many people prefer Marangu as the simplest path on the mountain. However, due to the route’s short duration, altitude acclimatization is difficult. Mount Kilimanjaro is approached from the southeast. Because the ascent and descent are on the same trail, Marangu is less picturesque than the other routes. As a result, it is also the busiest route.

Marangu is available as a five- or six-day private climb with Kennedy Adventure Tanzania. The five-day option does not include an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut on day three.
